Yoga is a highly recommended exercise if you are overweighted or total beginner and right now you just need a proper yoga mat as slipping and sliding around on your mat isn’t just annoying and distracting, but it can also be dangerous!!! Yoga is all about focusing your gaze inward, centering, and calming yourself — and that can be really hard to do if you’re being distracted by your own sweat.

Whether you practice yoga at home, go to a studio or seek out a class while on vacation, having the right yoga mat can be the difference between enjoying your yoga session and having trouble getting comfortable. The longer you practice yoga, the more quickly you’ll be able to identify a mat that suits your particular body and needs. Because yoga practitioners enjoy a variety of mat qualities, no specific mat is perfect for everyone.

Factors to consider when choosing a proper yoga mat

Thickness

A yoga mat’s thickness is one of its most important qualities, but one given thickness isn’t ideal for everyone. Exercise mats are available in several thicknesses; the most common thickness is 1/8 inch.

If you like the feel of a thicker mat beneath you, a mat measuring 1/4 inch provides ample padding. If you travel frequently, consider a mat measuring 1/16 of an inch, as it takes up less space when you roll it.

Eco-friendliness

If eco-friendliness is important to you, avoid yoga mats made of PVC (the traditional sticky mat), which does not break down in landfills and is difficult and costly to recycle. Rubber, jute and, cotton yoga mats, while available in a range of thicknesses, tend to be thicker and slicker than PVC mats.

You can get a yoga mat that’s eco-friendly, has a thickness that meets your needs for comfort and portability, and has a texture (such as a raised geometric pattern) that prevents slippage.

Stickiness

A sticky yoga mat keeps you from sliding all over the place and helps you maintain your alignment as you move from one pose to another, as well as when you hold poses for several seconds.

If you need help to stay put in your poses but you bristle at the thought of practicing on a yoga mat with a raised texture, a PVC yoga mat is probably your best bet.

Just remember that these yoga mats are only sticky when they are clean, so make sure you care for your yoga mat properly. If you buy a PVC yoga mat, wash it before you use it and use a handy yoga wash cleaner whenever you notice your hands sliding forward in downward dog.

Texture

The texture of your yoga mat dictates how much traction it provides. Like stickiness, texture affects how much slipping and sliding you do. It provides physical barriers to sliding (whereas stickiness relies on suction). And because texture affects the way a yoga mat feels, it’s also a component of overall comfort.

Yoga Mat by Yoga Zeal

This mat is an absolute piece of art. Featuring each phase of the moon and set fittingly against a soft black backdrop, this mat is simply beautiful.

The mat’s bottom is made from natural rubber (for a non-slip backing on any surface) and synthetic suede as the top layer that’s velvety soft and super-sweat absorbing.

It measures in at 72” x 24” with a 3mm thickness that’s cushy enough to support your joints beneath hard surfaces. The top material is uniquely designed to gain grip and traction as you sweat.

Think yoga mat and towel united. The suede effectively absorbs moisture and uses it to give you a steadfast grip – gone are the days of slipping and sliding as you perspire.

If you don’t sweat much, don’t worry! Try the mat out, and if you’d like added grip, just spritz it with water where your hands and feet go.

This mat is not only made with eco-friendly products; it’s also foldable, and can be machine washed (just be sure to air dry)! That’s a huge plus, especially for hot yogis who often practice and therefore need to clean their sweaty mats regularly.

Pros:

  • Good if you are sweating a lot
  • Unique design
  • Contains natural rubber
  • It is foldable so you can wash it in washing machine

      Hi Chris

I have tried several Yoga matrasses but Manduka is one the best ones. Enjoy your exercise

I never looked into the quality of a yoga mat before. I bought mine from a relatively cheap shop years ago. I suppose if you do yoga frequently, it does pay to have a good quality mat, especially if it’s made from eco-friendly materials.
I think I prefer the Jade Harmony mat purely for the fact that they plant one tree for each mat sold. Thanks for the great info.
